5 Ways to Beat the Holiday Stress.
The holidays are here and they seemed way too come to early this year. Take some advice and get in control of the hassles and stress that comes with this season.
Get into the holiday spirit and not the holiday melt down with these helpful holiday tips.
- Downsize the Holidays this year.
Especially with the way the economy has been, you simply can’t afford the expense and stress the holidays bring. Plan on making this season small and comfortable for you and for your pocket book.
If you’re buying a gift for every sibling, aunt, uncle and in-law, set a price limit. Draw names this year and buy for just one nice gift for one person.
Schedule a holiday dinner with friends and don’t give gifts. Focus on enjoying one another’s time. Remember the season is about making memories. Invest in making a memorable time for one another.
- Spread out Santa’s work.
Enlist the help of your spouse and kids in holiday preparations.
Give the kids gifts to wrap, get their help making the cookies. This is a way to pass down those holiday recipes to the kids.
Don’t be the only one doing the shopping and give out a list to your spouse. You husband needs to share in the gift buying and then he will know what has been bought too.
Don’t decorate alone. Schedule a family decorating day. Turn on the holiday music make some snacks and have fun.
This is all about relieving your stress. Sharing the holiday chores will help.
- You can’t do everything.
Coordinating holiday activities is overwhelming.
Prioritize your events and remember you can’t do everything and be everywhere. You just might have to miss some things this year. Is the price you will have to pay emotionally worth it?
Make time for rest and relaxation. Make time for yourself in all the activities. Get enough rest and just don’t overdo it. An afternoon nap helps too.
Post a calendar where everyone can see it so everyone knows time and place.
- Make a List, Keep to it.
This sounds simple, but making a list of who you need to shop for, how much you want to spend and gift ideas will eliminate a lot of stress and extra trips to the store.
Buy some generic gifts to have on hand, like candles or gift cards, for any spur-of-the-moment gifts. If you don’t have a plan you will over spend and raise your stress level. Plus you haven’t followed tip number one.
- Just say no.
You don’t have to do everything and attend every function. Be gracious when you decline. In the end you won’t be overwhelmed.
Remember this, the pressures everyone faces during the holiday season can magnify existing mental health problems that may be under control otherwise.
